The Shark Bay region is one of the most unique floristic areas in the world. It is home to 673 species of vascular plants and of these 281 are found on Dirk Hartog Island. One plant of particular interest is Olearia occidentissima, a plant that is thought to be endemic to the island. However to date little time has been put into surveying the flora of Dirk Hartog Island and as such it is possible that there are other unique, rare or endangered species of plants to be found on the island.
