Sheep & Goat Eradication Program

The project aims at rehabilitating the flora and fauna of Dirk Hartog Island.

Since the Wardle family sold the majority of sheep off the island in 2007, the island's natural vegetation has strongly improved.

In 2008, the first ground shooting has taken place and a good deal of the remaining sheep and goats had been eliminated.

A further ground shooting took place in February 2009, when the number of sheep and goat has been decreased strongly and only a small amount of feral animals was left on the island.

An 11 day Ground Shooting Program will take place in the last week of August 2009 to eradicate the remaining animals. A team of 12 DEC staff will be attending this immense Ground Shooting to exempt the island from feral sheep and goats.

We ask all visitors to keep out of the danger zones and ask the island's management for further details on the Shooting Programs.
