Renowned for its history, natural beauty, spectacular landscapes and fishing, Dirk Hartog Island is an ‘ark’ for endangered wildlife and a great place for an island adventure.
Come and see this unique World Heritage site and witness firsthand the ‘Return to 1616’ ecological restoration project aiming to return the island to how Dirk Hartog discovered it 400 years ago.
Bring your own 4WD vehicle to Dirk Hartog Island for the ultimate off road adventure.
Turn off the North West Coastal Hwy at the Overlander Roadhouse located approximately 700km north of Perth. Take the Shark Bay Road towards Denham (World Heritage Drive) and follow for 41km until you reach a left hand turn onto Useless Loop Rd.
The Useless Loop Road starts as a black top (sealed road) for the first 20km before hitting the gravel. Follow this road towards Useless Loop. The road winds past the turn off to Useless Loop Salt Mine before coming to a cross road. Turn right towards Steep Point (The left hand turn will take you to False Entrance).
This short section of road is firm and does not require low range 4WD.
Deflate your tyres to 20psi and engage 4WD. The first hill that you encounter is one of the most difficult. It’s a gradual rise stretching approximately 1.8km. If your tyres are deflated, you should not have any difficulties. Look out for oncoming traffic and take it slow. Report to the Department of Parks and Wildlife rangers house to check in and receive up to date information on barge pick up points and times.
