How to get to Dirk Hartog Island

Guests can access the island by either barge, charter boat or light aircraft.

Geraldton to Steep Point (Barge Transfer Site): approx. 5hrs 30mins

Access via Steep Point

The Island Barge, “Hartog Explorer”
A landing barge is available to transfer 4WD vehicles from Steep Point to Dirk Hartog Island. The landing barge carries one vehicle and a trailer at a time and takes approximately 15 minutes to cross the waters of South Passage. Bookings are essential.

The barge operates 364 day’s a year ‘on demand’ from the Barge Landing Beach, Steep Point. (Operates: 7.30am – 10:00am with prior bookings)

Access via Denham

By Boat
Return boat transfers from Denham to Dirk Hartog Island are arranged upon booking. Travel time is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes aboard the Naiad. Guests are required to be at the Denham jetty at 1.30 pm ready for a 2.00 pm departure. To arrange a transfer, contact the Eco Lodge at escape@dirkhartogisland.com.

By Air – Your Plane or Charter Flight
A light aircraft can be arranged to transfer passengers direct from Monkey Mia Airport to Dirk Hartog Island airstrip through Shark Bay Aviation. Flight time is approximately 15 minutes.
